* Note: Great Falls, of the Potomac River, is actually in Maryland. (The state boundary follows the shoreline on the Virginia side of the river.) There is a National Park along the Virginia Shore, a portion of which is maintained for viewers of the Great Falls cataract. Though visible from the Maryland side of the river, access is from the Virginia side.
