Visitors' Center - From I-81 take exit 313 if northbound or 313-B if southbound. Follow US-17 toward downtown Winchester to Pleasant Valley Road (3 blocks west of the Interstate) and turn right. Go one block and the Winchester-Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau is just
ahead to your right at 1360 S. Pleasant Valley Road. Old Town Winchester - More than a row of old buildings, this historic area includes a host of shops (including antiques sales), sidewalk cafes, small galleries plus a few local crafts shops. Old Town Winchester is in the heart of 45 square blocks of buildings on the National Historic Registry. Loudoun Street is closed to traffic. Tours available. Blandy Experimental Farm
& State Arboretum Of Virginia - A 700-acre, University of Virginia, research facility located about 10 miles east of Winchester on US-17/50. Associated with the Farm is the State Arboretum of Virginia. The Arboretum has on display more than 8,000 trees and woody shrubs including more than half the world’s pine species, a grove of 300+ ginkgo trees and an herb garden (featuring culinary, medicinal and ornamental herbs). Other specialty gardens include the Virginia Native Plant Trail and the Boxwood Memorial Garden (home to the largest collection of boxwood cultivars in North America). The Arboretum maintains a number of self-guided walks through the gardens. They also maintain a 'gift shop' where you can purchase selected plants. During their Arborfest in October, a number of growers assemble here for a giant sale of their own productions. Wilson’s Pet Farm - This is an attraction for kids and their parents. Visitors are able to interact with the animals through petting and feeding. |
Dinosaur Land
- Walk among 30 life-sized reproductions of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Here is a place where imagination can really take off without the assist of blinking lights and other artificial mechanisms. Kids will have a ball seeing and playing on these giants. Actually located in White Post (about 7 miles east of Winchester). Abrams Delight Museum - Here is a genuine, 18th Century house (featuring an open hearth kitchen fireplace) decked out with a variety of antique furnishings and artwork. Also on the premises is an old log cabin. George Washington’s Office Museum - Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters - this was General Jackson's headquarters from November 1861 to March 1862. Here Jackson made plans for the Romney Campaign to the west as well as for his famous Valley Campaign. On display is much Jackson memorabilia and Civil War relics. The home was once owned by Mary Tyler Moore’s great, great grandfather. » Hotels in Winchester « |
