Maryland Waterfalls

Maryland has only one significant, free-falling waterfall: Muddy Creek Falls in Swallow Falls State Park in western Maryland. The other waterfalls are actually cascades. Some, like 'Great Falls' in the Potomac River a few miles upstream from Washington D.C., churn the river for up to 1,000 yards with drops up to 30 yards. Most, however, are much less spectacular.

*Note: Great Falls is in the Potomac River which is actually in Maryland (the boundary follows the shoreline on the Virginia side of the river). There is a National Park along the Virginia Shore, a portion of which is maintained for viewers of the Great Falls cataract. Though visible from the Maryland side of the river, access is from the Virginia side.
