You can't drive to it and it isn't easy to walk to it. So why is it included? Newly added to the regions repertoire to make the stay of tourists more enjoyable is the Cheat Mountain Salamander: a self-powered rail car (they call it their rail bus). Actually a replica of a 1922 Edwards Railway Motor Car, it runs on the highest, standard gauge railbed east of the Rocky Mountains. For about $20, you can board the Salamander and ride it on a three-hour trip along the Cheat River, past the hydrospectaular High Falls, climb up and pass through the 'Big Cut' and...

How to get there:

From I-79, take exit 99 and follow US-33 east to US-219/250 SOUTH at Elkins (about 38 miles). Turn right and follow 219 south to Huttonsville (about 18 miles). Here, US-250 goes left (east). Turn left and follow US-250 to Cheat Bridge.
