Great Falls
George Washington Memorial Parkway
Great Falls, VA

Great Falls Park is a special 800 acre section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway about 14 miles north of Washington D.C. (on the Virginia side of the river). More a 3500 foot long cataract than a waterfall, per se, the Potomac River here, hemmed in by the narrow Mather Gorge, can become absolutely violent during high water periods. In October, the view of the autumn colors along the Gorge accented by the sounds and sights of the Great Falls is a spectacle enjoyed by visitors since Colonial times.

Take Exit 44 of I-495 (Hwy-193, Georgetown Pike) and follow 193 west for about 4 miles. Turn right at Old Dominion Drive following it 1 mile to the park entrance.

The National Park Service has an excellent web site describing the Park and its facilities at Great Falls Park.
