From the group of little lakes just east of Duncan in Stevens County, stretching eastward, across I-35, to Lake of the Arbuckles near Sulphur in Murray County, is a beautiful oasis "in the middle of nowhere": the Arbuckle Mountains.
Popular with the 'paddlers', hikers and campers, this is a prime tourist attraction - especially if you like waterfalls. One of them is especially noteworthy: the 77 foot Turner Falls.
Falls Creek, a shallow, rather nondescript run for most of its course, hits a tight series of upright granit shelves and begins as a cascade, then splits into two or three 60+ foot falls (depending upon the water flow) plunging into a popular swimming hole.
Turner Falls Park, besides its exquisite natural beauty which includes waterfalls, natural caves and natural swimming areas complete with convenient bath houses, also offers picnic areas, camping and RV park with electrical hookups, cabin rentals, and a convenient store.
How to get there:
From I-35 southbound:
Take exit 51, drive south on US-77, through Cedar Village, to Turner Falls Park. A little less than one mile south of Cedar Village, turn right on the Turner Falls turnoff. Watch for signs.
From I-35 northbound:
Take exit 47, drive north on US-77 to Turner Falls Park. A little less than three miles north of exit 47, turn left on the Turner Falls turnoff. Watch for signs.
