Horse
Trough Falls
(northwest of) Helen
Height: 75ft Stream Flow: Small
Difficulty: Easy Trail Length:
0.8 miles
Horsetrough
Falls drops in a series of free-falls and cascades, combining three
separate ledges to create the 55-foot tall waterfall. Since this is a high
mountain waterfall (2360 ft), water flow will be highest 2-3 days after a
rain.
How to get there:
From I-85
northbound (e.g., from Atlanta):
- Head north on
I-85 to exit 113, the Gainesville split (about 27 miles from the I-75/85
split in Atlanta).
- Take the left
split and follow I-985 all the way to exit 22. (about 22 miles).
- Turn left at
the foot of the exit and follow US-129, through Gainesville, to its
intersection with GA-75 in Cleveland (about 25 miles).
- In Cleveland,
on the north side of down town, turn
right onto GA-75 (Stop Light)
-
Follow GA-75 through Helen.
(make sure to check your gas before leaving Helen). Continuing on 75
approx 9.4 miles.
-
2.7 miles past
Andrews Cove campground (after mile marker 15 but before Unicoi Gap)
turn left onto Forest Service Road 44(Wilkes Creek Road). The road is
technically a one-way road with
pull-outs, but it is pretty wide.
- Just over
4.0 miles into the drive, the Upper Chattahoochee campground is on the
right. Turn in and wind you way to the far end of the campground, the
day use parking area.
- A brown
sign marks the start of the trail.
