Winona Falls actually
consists of five falls; three cataracts culminating in a final pair of falls
like a double-barreled shotgun.
An interesting note:
Legend tells us that Winona Falls is named for the Indian Princess Winona who
took her life (by jumping from the cliff which overlooks the falls) because
her tribe had declared war on the tribe of her lover.
From I-80, take exit
309 and follow US-209 north to River Road in Shoemakers. Turn left and drive
up the hill about 0.6 miles to a fork. Take the right hand road (simply marked
T-523) about a half mile to another fork. This time take the left (Decker
Road) which immediately crosses Saw Creek. Follow it for about a mile. Timothy
Lake Road swings to the left; you'll see a road branching off to the right
which is Decker Road. Take this a little over a quarter mile to a small road
branching off to the right. Take this to the Winona Galls trail head. Be
careful around the overlook; that Indian Princess isn't the only one to fall
off.
From I-84, take the
US-209 exit at Matamoras and follow US-209 south to River Road in Shoemakers.
Turn right and follow the directions, above.
