The 40 foot High Shoals Falls is in South Mountains State Park in Burke County (about 18 miles south of Morganton). From I-40 exit 104 follow NC-18 south to Hwy-1913 (about 9 miles). This is also known as Sugarloaf Road. Turn right and continue another 4 miles to Old NC-18. Turn left and follow Old NC-18 4 miles to Hwy-1901, Wards Gap Road. Turn right and proceed to the State Park. Note: the park closes at dusk. It is also closed Christmas Day.

From the main parking area follow the trail (west, across the road) to the other picnic area. Two of the improved trails take off from here. The one on the left is High Shoals Loop Trail. Follow it, stay to the left (there is a branch to the right a few feet in) and you'll cross Jacob's Fork a couple times on the new foot bridges. After about a half mile you'll see High Shoals Falls.
