Glacier National Park
(Wateron-Glacier International Peace Park)

Route C
From I-15 (coming from south of Butte)

drive through Glacier National Park and
return to I-15 north or south - or -
I-90 heading eastbound from Butte

Via US-89 from Great Falls to Browning - the preferred Scenic Route:.

(US-89 is shorter in distance but a little longer in time, - but well worth it!. We suggest you fill your fuel tank at Great Falls.)

1. From I-15, take exit 290 at Vaughn (about 8 miles from Great Falls).

2. Follow US-89 northbound, through Choteau (about 51 miles), to Browning (about 72 miles).

- OR -

Via I-15 and US-2 from Great Falls, through Shelby, to Browning (the 'fast' route):

(We suggest you fill your fuel tank at Great Falls or Shelby.)

1. Follow I-15 northbound to exit 363 (Shelby).

2. Head west on US-2, through Cut Bank (about 23 miles), to Browning (34 more miles).

And, in either case, continuing from Browning...

3. Head, westbound (left) on US-2, from Browning to East Glacier Park (about 13 miles). From here you'll skirt the southern boundary of Glacier National Park, climb to the 5,220 high Marias Pass at Summit. You'll then follow Bear Creak down the mountain, around the southern tip of Glacier National Park to the Middle Fork of the Flathead river. The railroad track following (and frequently crossing) US-2 is now owned by Burlington Northern. At Essex is the composition yard where they add engines to eastbound trains to help them up the grade to the pass - or remove the extra engines from the westbound trains having descended from the pass. This is a favorite stop for railroad buffs. Continue on US-2 to West Glacier (about 57 miles from East Glacier) passing between the 8,705 ft Great Northern Mountain (on your left) and the 9,376 ft Mount St Nicholas on your right.

4. The West Glacier entrance road to Glacier National Park is to your right (it is well marked). You'll stop at the West Entrance Station where you pay your fee and get the official Glacier National Park literature and map and you are on your way on Going-to-the-Sun Road (entry fee is $10.00 per non-commercial automobile - good for 7 days).

5. From St, Mary, head south on US-89, through Kiowa (about 19 miles) to Browning (13 more miles).

6. At Browning, follow US-2 eastbound through Cutbank (about 34 miles) to I-15 at Shelby (23 more miles).

6. Enter I-15 using the northbound or southbound on-ramp as your destination dictates.
