Gooseberry Falls in northern Minnesota's 'Arrowhead Country' is actually a series of 5 waterfalls formed by the Gooseberry River just before it empties into Lake Superior: Fifth, Fourth, Upper, Middle and Lower Falls. Upper Falls is located just above the bridge. The 'five-story-high' Middle and Lower Falls, the more spectacular of the five falls, are located just below the bridge. Fourth and Fifth Falls which require a bit more hiking (about one mile) up river are as spectacular but, because of the requirement to hike over a part paved, part dirt and part intertwined roots to them: a good reason why they are much less frequented.
Gooseberry Falls has a spectacular, $3.5 million visitor center which opened in September 1996. Besides the usual gift shop, the center features a multi-media information center.
How to get there:
From Duluth MN, follow Hwy-61 northeast to Two Harbors (about 30 miles) and continue another 12.6 miles past Two Harbors to the Gooseberry Falls Park.
From Grand Portage ON, follow Hwy-61 southwest into Minnesota, through Grand Marais to the intersection of Hwy-1 at Illgen City (about 86 miles from the ON-MN border). From there continue southwest on Hwy-61 20.2 more miles to Gooseberry Falls Park.
