Falls Creek plummets off a 90
foot high sandstone cliff forming Williamsport Falls, Indiana's tallest
waterfall, - at least it does when there is water in Falls Creek. As the
nursery rhyme goes, when he's good, he's very, very good and when he's bad
he's a horrible disappointment." In Minneapolis there is a (part-time)
waterfalll that they turn on for VIPs and turn off when they leave. Maybe
Williamsport should add a spiggot.
All we were able to
find out is that it "falls when it rains". So if you're going to
make a special trip to Williamsport some day to see their waterfall, be sure
it is during a wet one.
How to get there:
From I-74:
Take exit 4 and head north on the 4-lane IN-63 to the junction of IN-28 (about
12 miles). Turn right and head to Williamsport. As you enter town there is a
fork in the road; IN-28 goes left and Railroad Street goes right. Bear right
onto Railroad Street and go about 300 yards to Monroe Street. Turn right and
at the firehouse (BEFORE you cross the bridge) there is a sign directing you
to Williamsport
Falls. Turn left into this small graveled road to the wooden observation
deck.
From I-65:
If southbound, take
exit 178 and drive south on IN-43, through West Lafayette and over the
Wabash River to IN-25. Turn right and follow IN-25 to IN-28 at Odell. Turn
right and follow IN-28 through Attica where you are joined by US-41. Drive
on, over the Wabash River Bridge and, about 2.1 miles beyond (west of) the
bridge, IN-28 splits off of US-41 heading south to Williamsport. Make the
left turn and follow IN-28 into Williamsport. You'll pass 4th ST, then 3rd
St, Front St, then 3 more to reach Monroe Street. Turn left onto Monroe. Now
you'll cross Midway, then Railroad Street. Now look for the firehouse
(BEFORE you cross the bridge) where there is a sign directing you to Williamsport
Falls. Turn left into this small graveled road to the wooden observation
deck.
